We are continuing TheSummerProgram created by Mika Shigematsu in the “Montefeltro Music Festival”.

Mika Shigematsu, who died suddenly in 2019, starred in famous opera houses such as the San Francisco Opera, New York City Opera, the Paris Opera, Seattle Opera, and the Carlo Felice Theater (Genoa), among many others in her long professional career.  Although she lived in New York, she found time to teach as Guest Professor at the College of Music in her native Osaka, Japan.

In 2002, she started the intensive training program TSP (The Summer Program) for singers and pianists in New York, and since 2009 she has been developing the course in Novafeltria, Emilia-Romagna, Italy. Professor Shigematsu gave every aspiring singer her all, regardless of their age. And, regardless of their background, she gave them the skills and knowledge necessary to be a successful singer at the “Montefeltro Festival”.  This course has provided an opportunity for Japanese singers to learn about the singing that is required in the operatic world, study Romance-language music in Italy, and provide a cultural exchange with Italian audiences of Japanese culture.  This year, we are opening up the program to international students of any age.

Currently, music journalist and stage director Shintaro Kobayashi, Mika’s husband, has taken over the intentions of the program, and Tokyo International Vocal Arts Academy (TIVAA) is supporting its operation. This year will be the first in-person event since 2019, so we are planning a concert in honor of Professor Shigematsu’s achievements and in memory of her beloved personality.

Vocal Coach Ubaldo Fabri, known as a leader in diction-based Italian singing, will head up the program.  Soprano Laura Claycomb, a well-known American lyric coloratura soprano on the international circuit, long-time Italian resident and long-time friend and colleague of Professor Shigematsu, will impart her technical, linguistic and interpretive skills.  Shintaro Kobayashi will direct the scenes program, drawing on his degree in theater and experience behind the operatic scene. Master language teacher Ilaria Ciccioni will teach Italian lessons, and a Japanese translator will be available for all classes.
